Appearances

Appearances are deceptive. If an optician were to sell him such a sloppily made instrument, Hermann von Helmholtz wrote about the eye in the 19th century, he would feel justified in returning it to him. Optical illusions, afterimages, wrong/missing colours – the list of deficiencies established as a result of Helmholtz’s experiments is long. If we are talking about a dependable understanding of the visual stimulus as received by the eye, might we not be better advised to rely on our ears?
