Appearances

Appearances are deceptive. If an optician were to sell him such a sloppily made instrument, Hermann von Helmholtz wrote about the eye in the 19th century, he would feel justified in returning it to him. Optical illusions, afterimages, wrong/missing colours – the list of deficiencies established as a result of Helmholtz’s experiments is long. If we are talking about a dependable understanding of the visual stimulus as received by the eye, might we not be better advised to rely on our ears?

With music by Georges Aperghis, Carola Bauckholt, Friedrich Cerha, Franco Donatoni, Beat Furrer, Olga Neuwirth, Marko Nikodijević, Iris ter Schiphorst, Agata Zubel et. al.
