Klangforum Wien’s rehearsal space is located in Vienna’s fifth district, an area which lies at some distance from the city’s established cultural scene, where an abundance of diverse cultures and talents is on offer and where social exclusion becomes quickly obvious. Diversity, dialogue and reflection characterize the work of the ensemble’s 24 musicians from ten different countries, who gather here every day in order to rehearse, discuss and conceptualise. The artistic collective’s desire to make their work accessible to the largest possible audience and so pave the way to a lasting integration of contemporary music into the musical life of the city and its inhabitants, gave rise to a great number of (intermediation) projects over the past 20 years.
With its programme Klangforum PLUS, the ensemble’s focus is on long-standing partnerships and encounters between various cultures. In addition to workshops for composition and interpretation, rehearsal visits and introductions to new works for children and young audiences are on offer. Pertormance Practice in Contemporary Music, the specialised curriculum which Klangforum teaches as part of its professorship at the University for Culture in Graz, endeavours to pass the ensemble’s skills and knowledge on to a young generation of musicians.
