Wolfgang Heiniger
Prof. Wolfgang Heiniger was born in Basle. He studied percussion and electroacoustic music at the local College of Music. A residency as guest student at CCRMA Stanford/USA was followed by studies in composition with Thomas Kessler in Basle.
Wolfgang Heiniger has performed as percussionist with various orchestras and ensembles at festivals such as the Wiener Festwochen or the Warsaw Autumn.
As performer, musician and sound director he works at concerts and festivals throughout Europe, South America and Asia. He is co-founder and member of THE BEAM (Basel Electric Art Messengers) and of the „European Powerbook Orchestra”.
His compositions include works for live-electronics and instrumental pieces as well as incidental music, pieces for dance theatre, the stage and film. Interactive and scenic concepts form an integral part of many of his compositions; with computers, sensory systems and mathematical models playing an important part in their realisation.
Wolfgang Heiniger has also been involved as organiser in music institutions.
Since 1989 he has worked as board member and programming councilor at various associations and festivals - together with Thomas Kessler he founded the „Echt!Zeit” Festival and he acts as programming councilor at the Festival Rümlingen and the „Gare Du Nord” in Basle. Between 1995 and 2003 he was in charge of the study course „audio-design” which was conceived and established by him for the University of Music in Basle; and between 1999 and 2003 he was co-director of the Electronic Studios ESB.
In the summer semester 2003 Wolfgang Heinrich was offered a professorship for Intermedial Composition at the University of Music Hanns Eisler Berlin; and between April 2008 and March 2010 he was appointed prorector of this institution.
