Thomas Mehnert, Bass

Thomas Mehnert was born in Chemnitz; he received his first music education as choir boy both with the Dresdner Kreuzchor and the Winsbacher Knabenchor. He later perfected his vocal training at the Richard Strauss Conservatory in Munich and was rewarded a scholarship by the Deutsche Bühnenverein. Following master classes with Ernst Haefliger and Josef Metternich, he made his debut at the Staatstheater Cottbus. Later on he became a member of the company, first at the theatre in Dortmund and then at the Staatstheater Wiesbaden. In addition, he sang guest performances at opera houses in Amsterdam, Geneva, at the Salzburg Festival, the Deutsche Oper Berlin and in Braunschweig.

Recent engagements took him to the Komische Oper Berlin in the role of Figaro („Marriage of Figaro”) and to the Nationaltheater Weimar as Count Walter („Luisa Miller”). In Darmstadt, where he was made an honorary member of the ensemble in 2006, he has sung parts such as Ferrando
(„Il Trovatore”), Daland („The Flying Dutchman”), Baculus („Der Wildschütz”), Titurel („Parsifal”) and Sparafucile („Rigoletto”), as well as the roles of Cardinal Brogni („La Juive”), Kothner („The Mastersingers of Nuremberg”) and Timur („Turandot”) in the 2008/09 season.
