Johannes Kalitzke


Born in Cologne in 1959, Johannes Kalitzke studied church music from 1974 to 1976. After his high-school diploma he studied piano at the Cologne Music College with Aloys Kontarsky, conducting with Wolfgang von der Nahmer and composition with York Höller. At IRCAM in Paris, Kalitzke studied with Vinko Globokar, in Cologne with Hans Ulrich Humpert (electronic music). His first engagement as a conductor was in 1984 at the Gelsenkirchener Musiktheater im Revier where, from 1988 to 1990 he was principal conductor. After that he took over in 1986 as conductor of the Forum for New Music succeeding Carla Henius. In 1991 he became artistic director and conductor of Musikfabrik, the national ensemble of North Rhine-Westphalia. 
 
Since then he has also been a regular guest conductor with Ensembles (Klangforum Wien) and Symphony Orchestras. He has been guest-conductor at, amongst others, The Salzburg Festival, the Wiener Festwochen, the Munich Biennale, and the Dresden Festival. 
 
As a composer Kalitzke has received numerous awards and noted success with ensembles such as the London Sinfonietta, Ensemble Intercontemporain, Klangforum Wien and orchestras such as the Symphony Orchestra of the SWF. Since 1996 he has been a lecturer at the Darmstadt Summer Courses.
